Jissen Women's University was established in 1899 by Utako Shimoda, a pioneer in modern Japanese women's education. She sought to educate women to be independent, and encouraged them to play a role in bettering the world.
Our goal today is to nurture global citizens who can, based on Utako Shimoda’s philosophy, bring about positive changes in society and work to shape a better future.

President’s Message

Cultivating globally aware students who can impact society and shape the future

Jissen Women’s Educational Institute, made up of Jissen Women's University and Jissen Women's Junior College, was established in 1899 by Utako Shimoda, a pioneer in modern Japanese women's education, whose spiritual motto was “when women change society, they change the world.” It was established with the philosophy of “Fostering self-confident women who can be independent and self-directing.” The year 2019 marked the 120th anniversary of our founding, and this spirit and philosophy has been passed down to us to this day.
